What is a Periodontist? 

Periodontists are dental specialists that must complete specialty training beyond the requirements of dental school. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, periodontists receive extensive training, three years of additional education beyond dental school--in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, placement of dental implants, and the treatment of oral inflammation. 

Who Should See a Periodontist? 

A growing number of dental patients are exhibiting signs of periodontal disease. Research performed by dentists and the American Academy of Periodontology also suggests that there is a relationship between periodontal disease and other chronic diseases of aging. Therefore, it’s best for patients with moderate or severe levels of periodontal disease, or patients with complex cases, to develop a partnership with their periodontist because of their level of expertise as a trained specialist.
